CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Under The Nile’s care recommendations are to not immerse their toys in water, nor leave them out to air dry. Instead, machine wash and tumble dry (both on a low temperature). Mild biodegradable detergents are recommended.
Dry thoroughly to ensure the organic cotton filling doesn’t stay damp. To help dry your toy faster, put a bath towel in the dryer with it.
Surface clean only if the hang-label specifies to spot-clean. This relates to Under The Nile’s larger toys which can’t be machine washed. As with all their toys, do not immerse in water – just use mild detergent on a damp cloth to spot clean.
FILLING: 100% organic cotton, certified by Control Union to the US’s National Organic Program (NOP) standard.
WHITENING, DYEING, FINISHING: No chemical “nasties” are used in the production of these toys. The GOTS certification covers all the manufacturing processes that produce the finished organic cotton fabrics.
Low-impact, reactive dyes are used to produce the colours. These reactive dyes are so-named for their low environmental impact and the way in which they react very effectively with the fabric, minimising pollution and eliminating the need for other further processes such as the use of colour-fasting agents.
MANUFACTURE ETHICS: The founders of Under the Nile toys care passionately about organics, the environment and in helping to improve the lives and living conditions of people in poverty-stricken areas of Egypt.
Under the Nile is partnered with - and solely supplied by - an award-winning Egyptian organisation, SEKEM*, where both parties share equally outstanding ethical standards and a commitment to environmental, cultural and social business practices. All of Under the Nile’s toys come from farms and production facilities that are Fair Trade Certified. Along with their joint vision with SEKEM, the workers who produce these toys benefit from good working conditions, fair pay and access to education and health centres for the workers and the workers’ children.
With every Under the Nile product that you buy, you’re helping SEKEM to continue to transform people’s lives, bringing economic opportunities to rural villages, including through their “13 Villages Project” which helps villagers to start their own businesses, thanks to the many support paths provided by SEKEM.
*SEKEM is Egypt’s premier Sustainable Development and Organic Product Initiative.
